Robert Rolleston and the pirates of the Caribbean

In this swashbuckling tale from Watnall Hall we focus on young Robert Rolleston, seeking his fortune in the cut-throat maritime trade of wartime Georgian England and his daughter Frances, a Victorian do-er of good deeds, Christian philanthropist and pioneer of England’s first infant schools, including our one here at Bog End.

The expanding British Empire and the wars with France and America created lucrative opportunities for enterprising traders like Robert but the choppy waters of international commerce were filled with risk and blurred the lines of moral responsibility.
It's a tale of duels and high seas adventures; of state-sponsored pirates and buccaneering privateers; of slave-trading merchants and anti-slavery campaigners with father and daughter on opposing sides of the Abolitionist battle led by family-friend William Wilberforce. We also look at new evidence that suggests Rolleston challenged William Wilberforce to a deadly duel...

This tale is one of many picked from the family tree of the Watnall Hall Rollestons. Click here to read it...
